The identity documents which I sent with my application went missing, apparently while in the care of Skipton office in Guernsey,
My first Skipton bank statement shows a rate of interest much below that advertised. I have asked for an explanation.

Thank you for your feedback, which I have investigated and for which my colleague Arran will be contacting you.
Unfortunately, your original identity documents were not received at Skipton's office. The rate of interest on your initial deposit might be lower than you expected as it did not meet the advertised account minimum threshold and was therefore attracting the lower rate.

Good selection of accounts for expats with very competitive interests rates for savings. Prompt service. I opened an account by mail and transferred money in directly from another building society. All went very well. Their website is very useful and it answered all my questions.

As far as Skipton's offerings it was pretty fair but not the best. They were the biggest lenders so we had no option. They were very slow in getting things moving only till the very end when they knew they needed to get the paper work done and back to the lawyers before the court day (after it had already been pushed back once due to Skipton). For instance we rushed to get everything together for them so we could proceed with the mortgage, but after submitting it all to them we got silly things back like "we need original bank statements from the bank and not printed ones". This was completely stupid as in this day and age most people get this via email and our bank could not provide this right away so we had to wait 5 working days for it to arrive. Once it did and I mentioned it to them we were asked to scan it and send it over via email... HOW IS THIS ORIGINAL!? I could have sent over the PDF I downloaded in the first place. Complete waste of time... Because of this it delayed the submitting of the mortgage papers and this then delayed the booking of the surveyor and because of this it ran onto the Easter week and we could not get any till after court day and in turn this forced us to delay our court date. They could have at least pre-booked the surveyor weeks before and charged us regardless if we went through with it or not or cancelled the appointment. Skipton made it way more stressful than it needed to be and its hard enough having to sell and buy and deal with the lawyers all at the same time as this poor assistance from them.

I am disappointed that you found our service slow. I understand that from your completed application form with supporting documents being received it took just 3 working days to instruct a valuation. The valuation (by an independent local RICS qualified surveyor) itself took two weeks, however, this was over the Easter period. On receipt of the valuation a offer letter was prepared by Skipton the following day and your completion took place in the following week's court session. In the circumstances this does not appear slow at all on Skipton's part.
In terms of the requirement for an original bank statement, this is a regulatory requirement upon Skipton as you used your bank statement as proof of address. The requirement to see original proof of address documentation is something which Skipton and other financial service providers have no control. I understand that some transactions were missing form the original bank statements that were requested as scans for the purposes of underwriting.

There were big delays in posting documents to and from Israel. A web service rather than telephone would be a great advantage for those living abroad.

Skipton is currently implementing a new banking system that will facilitate online access, which we are hoping to be rolling out from the end of this year.
